Crimes Against Animals in Iowa

Right in Our Back Yard

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa wants to make you aware of these recent incidences. We want to make you aware of these cases so that you may take appropriate actions if your organization is approached regarding adoption.

• On or about Oct. 8, 2014, Leo A. Nopoulos is alleged to have physical abused and tortured a cat belonging to his roommate. The incident was caught on video and Nopoulos is alleged to have hit, struck with objects, and thrown the cat over a period of over three hours. Nopoulos waived his preliminary hearing and an arraignment date has not been set yet.

• On October 6, 2014, the Humane Society of Northeast Iowa picked up 2 dogs, a pug and a boxer mix, that the owners, Joseph Marting and Ashley Marting were surrendering. Both dogs were allegedly severely malnourished and were taken to Dubuque Regional Humane Society where the pug passed away. The boxer mix was placed in foster care and is recovering. Joseph Marting and Ashley Marting were both charged with 2 counts of Animal Neglect Resulting in Death or Serious Injury (717B.3) and are scheduled for arraignment on Nov. 18, 2014 at 9:30 AM.

Peter Joseph Olson of Mason City entered a guilty plea to Animal Neglect 717B.3 (3) (a serious misdemeanor) on May 13, 2014.

Media reports indicate that this conviction comes about due to an allegation that Olson suffocated a 5 year old Shar Pei he owned by placing a plastic bag over the dog’s head. This was allegedly done to avoid the expense of euthanasia by a veterinarian.

The Mason City Police Police report shows that Olson admitted to placing a plastic bag over the head of his dog to kill it (because it appeared ill) to save the expense of a veterinary bill. Police records indicate that the other resident at the address of 637 South President Avenue, Mason City IA is Donna Louise Olson.
